Cahir Castle, located in the town with the same name, is one of the largest intact castles in Ireland. Built originally in 1142,the castle was the site of a number of battles between the Irish and armies sent from England. The Castle sits on an island in the fork of a stream, and so is surrounded on nearly all sides by a moat. The castle was surrendered to Cromwell in 1650 without a struggle, which is largely why it is still rather intact, whereas many other castles in Ireland were reduced to rubble during this period. The town of Cahir itself, is a small but charming city.
