The historic train station at Manassas has a special place in my life, as well as in the hearts of Manassas City residents. Manassas has been a strategic railway junction since the Civil War, however, the current train station was built in 1914, and reflects both Victorian elegance and Turn-of-the-Century progressive charm. When I first arrived in Manassas in 1995, the train station was a lonely boarded up building. By the time I began commuting by VRE train into DC in 1997, the depot had been renovated by the City of Manassas to match its original appearance under the direction of The Manassas Museum. The depot remains to this day as a busy stop for daily Amtrak and VRE trains. The station has a Norman Rockwell small town vibe and has become an official symbol of Old Town Manassas. The City stages its annual fireworks displays close by, and the sight of fireworks over this iconic station is an amazing way to celebrate Manassas and our great nation.
