In last days of January 2023, I traveled north of the Arctic Circle to the Lofoten Islands of Norway to see the Aurora Borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights. The Lofoten Islands feature stunningly beautiful landscapes, especially in winter where snow-covered mountains meet the blue-green waters of the North Sea. During the three nights we had enough open sky to see the Aurora, the landscape and sky were beautifully illuminated by a full moon. Our home base for our stay in Lofoten were the red fisherman’s cabins, or rorbu, in Mortsund. Located on a picturesque sound with jagged mountains in the background, these cabins also made for an outstanding and traditional Norwegian landscape for photographing the Aurora. Making images of the northern lights over these landscapes is a photographer’s dream!
