Many people do not realize that the Olympic National Park contains one of the only rainforests in the United States. Other locations include El Yunque in Puerto Rico, and the coast of Southeast Alaska. Throughout the winter season, the Hoh Rain Forest receives a yearly total of 140 to 170 inches (up to 14 feet!) of precipitation. The result is a lush, green canopy of mosses, ferns and trees. Photography in this rain forest can be challenging. The forest often has a large contrast range of light, and the vegetation often creates very chaotic scenery. It makes for a beautiful hike.
