Because the elevation is so low and the water tables so high, cemeteries in New Orleans consist mainly of above-ground burial vaults and tombs. These areas became known as the Cities of the Dead. Here is a collection of color, black and white, and infrared images taken at St Louis Cemetery No 1 in the French Quarter, Lafayette Cemetery No 1 in the Garden District, and Metairie Cemetery.
